Best of Birmingham – Wheelhouse Salon –
A couple posts ago you may remember how I mentioned I had my hair done by amazing stylist Courtney Grimes of Wheelhouse Salon here in Homewood (Birmingham), AL. She with her awesome asymmetrical, bleach-blonde bob and her husband opened Wheelhouse Salon about two years ago. This place has grown crazy fast and it’s now one of the most popular salons in Birmingham. Especially among the fashionable, young Bham crowd. Courtney herself started doing hair 15 years ago between Mountain Brook, Vestavia and now here in Homewood. Not only is she a wife, salon owner and rock star stylist but she also has three kids under 8. On the day of my appointment she fixed my DIY ombre dye job and also made it blonder. With her guidance I also decided to go shorter so the sides were slightly longer than the back and I love it! Sometimes I miss the longer hair but that’s what clip-in extensions are for right? Keep reading to learn more about Wheelhouse Salon, the amazing decor and to see the finished product!
So here I am in my cape while Courtney is off mixing the color. I took the moment to snap a before photo in the mirror. Before she started with the color I showed her photos of girls with beautiful shades of blonde like Olivia Palermo’s lighter color and cuts that were shorter and kind of choppy. And boy did Courtney deliver! She went with the balayage technique with the hair separated with foil, and to blend my ombre she teased each section before applying the color. She added highlights and lowlights and even got it pretty blonde without compromising the health of my hair.
Wheelhouse Salon only carries two product lines, the first being Oribe which I am sure you have heard of. They make the infamous Dry Texturizing Spray among other cult favorites. The second being kind of Oribe’s younger sibling as they are made by the same manufacturer, R+Co, which now also happens to be one of my favorite lines. It’s just so cool, has amazing names, and well the product itself is unbeatable.
I love that the salon also carries local products like candles from Great Bear Wax Co. and these awesome leather accessories by Hide & True. It’s their own way of connecting with the community. It also adds a very chill and relaxed vibe to the salon. While waiting for my hair to process I was taken to this super cool little alcove with a leather bench and amazing wall decor. I especially love the white deer (?) head on the wall. In the processing area I was offered a huge variety of drinks: water, wine, beer, soda, etc. I took them up on a Coke and settled in with one of the many magazines they had on hand. Courtney checked on me often and eventually put me under one of their futuristic-looking heaters for about 5-10 minutes.
Once she thought my hair had achieved the perfect color I was directed back to the sink to get my hair washed which is always the best part. It’s just so damn relaxing! Courtney likes to blow-out the hair prior to cutting which was a fun experience. But first she added Oribe Supershine for a good blow-dry foundation as well as Oribe Gel Serum for some hold. Because I like to curl my hair with a slight wave away from the face Courtney says this is exactly how you should blow-dry, basically the way you plan on styling it. She did an amazing job but it’s going to take some practice for me to get the same results.
Did I mention how cool her shoes were? When I asked about them she said they were by Vagabond and while I couldn’t find the exact pair I did find them in all black here.
So here is the finished product, you like? After the blow-dry and amazing haircut she styled it. I told her I always have trouble getting those very beachy waves, you know the ones. Where it’s a kind of a straight-wave? Courtney knew exactly what I meant and delivered by using a flat-iron and in big vertical sections brought the iron down the hair and with a flick of her wrist, bent it away from my face. Again, this is another technique I am still working on. I’m not sure if I’ll ever master it but now I know I have Courtney if I find myself in a pinch. She finished the look with R+Co Badlands Dry Shampoo Paste and R+Co Outer Space Flexible Hair Spray. I am obsessed with my new hair! If you live in the area Wheelhouse Salon is open 6 days a week, closed on Sunday’s, and they have at least 8 amazing stylists and 3 apprentices.
