New Year, New You? Eight Goals For Overhauling Your Mind & Body in 2019

Everyone loves to speculate about New Year resolutions, don’t they? We’re fast approaching 2019, which means that somehow, 2018 has sped past and you haven’t managed to hit the goal you posted about in January on Instagram. You also probably never did get around to buying the wearable tech that counts all your steps, either. The good news is that you don’t have to panic. You have plenty of time to overhaul your body, your mind and generally your life. New Year resolutions are nice to have, but that doesn’t mean that you only have a year to complete them: it just means that you’ve set yourself some awesome goals that you would like to achieve at some point.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having goals, but the problem comes about when you don’t have the right ones. While no one can tell you that the way that you want to overhaul your mind or your body is wrong – we’re all different, after all – it does make sense to pick resolutions that will;

  1. You will be able to stick to, and;
  2. Don’t leave you feeling worse than you did when you set them.

You should be able to smile about the path you’ve put yourself on, because the more that you achieve, the better you feel about yourself. Perhaps you want to be able to get to know new people and be more social in the New Year? Perhaps you have baby weight you want off and you want to find a new way to workout that doesn’t leave you feeling bored and unfulfilled. Either way, whatever your resolutions, they have to make sense.

A goal shouldn’t be something that is too far out of reach. Unless you’re on track to become a millionaire, try not to set yourself the goal to become one in 2019. They should be specific and make you feel alive; like you’re actually going to achieve something this time. Do you have any idea what it can do for your mental health to know that you are on the right track and your goals are an arm’s length away? It can be an amazing feeling when you finally cross that finish line, so your goals need to be ones that you can achieve. What you need to become happier and healthier in 2019 isn’t going to be the same as the things that your friends need, which means that you have to look beyond what others are doing and solely focus on yourself.

While this may not come easy to you, choosing goals that enhance your life and make you feel secure and whole are the way to go, and with that in mind, we’ve got 8 steps that you can take for a mind and body overhaul in 2019.

Make New Friends

When we’re children, we meet new people every single day at school, in clubs and in the next door neighbour’s house. We stop doing that as we get older, preferring to stick to our circles and the people we already know. While this is all well and good, sometimes you need to meet new people to breathe a little life into your world. Whether you choose to do this in a place where you work out and get fit, or you want to seek out new friendships in a place you can exercise other hobbies, meeting new people doesn’t just feel good, bringing you comfort. It can also teach you about other areas of life and about yourself. Humans need people to be with, to love, to laugh with and to have companionship, and friendships can be the glue that holds you together when times get tough. Take the time to seek out new friendships in 2019 and you’ll be taking steps to overhaul your thinking.

Get Rid Of Clutter

A busy house is a nice thing, but an untidy one can attribute to an untidy mind. Eliminating the clutter from your life can bring you clarity that you didn’t know existed. If, over the years, you have stashed away exercise equipment and workout clothing and never used them, don’t throw those away – you may need them for the first goal of making new friends! The point is that if you haven’t used something in the last six months, you don’t need to keep it in your life anymore. Create space in your house, and you create space in your soul at the same time.

Drink More Water

You’ve heard this one, but it should still be a resolution of yours. Drinking more water does so much more for you than just help you to stay regular and eliminates toxins. It keeps you awake. Drinking water over coffee and other drinks can mean you literally hydrate your brain and keep a sense of clarity. You’re not sluggish. You’re not fatigued. You’re not falling asleep while you stand. You’re calm and alert and awake and it’s all because you’ve added more water into your daily routine. Make it a goal, and you’ll eventually make it a habit that you can stick to.

Workout More

Finding the motivation to workout when it’s winter is not easy. All you want to do is hibernate and eat chocolate and stuff your face with hot Christmas sandwiches. The problem is that in the summer months, you have all the motivation in the world to keep going with your health routine and it tends to disappear in the cold. Instead of losing your motivation, take your workout indoors with for something to keep you going. A social way to workout, you can book classes and meet new people (as per an earlier goal) while keeping your motivation toward your body goals going. Fitness shouldn’t fall off your radar just because it’s cold outside, right?

Stop Complaining

A negative mindset in life is going to mean that you attract negative things. Stop worrying and moaning about the things that you want in life, and take the energy that you are spending complaining and put that into getting the things that you want instead. You could be surprised with how quickly you can change your life when you start taking action and stop verbalising how rubbish everything feels right now. Action is the only way you’re going to be able to get what you want, and this is going to to lead you to feeling calmer, less stressed and ready for anything.

Love Yo’Self

A big part of overhauling your mind and body is learning to love yourself and the best way that you can do that is to work out what you want from your body. Some people choose to exercise to get ripped, others do it for the flood of hormones that makes them feel good while they do it. Ultimately, you have to learn to love yourself and give yourself permission to workout for fun, eat without guilt and love the flaws as well as the perfections that your body has. Self-love, for most people, comes with age. It’s a mark of maturity for some people, because the older you get, the less you care about what others think of your body. As you learn to accept your physique – whether you continue working on yourself or not – you can gain a lot of confidence and comfort. This is a huge factor in overhauling your mind as well as your body as these things are both in harmony.

Get More Sleep

Your body will benefit from extra sleep whenever you can grab it, but it won’t often feel like it. If you get too much sleep, it can make you feel sluggish and fatigued for the day. Instead, set yourself a sleep schedule. Aim to be in bed by a certain time each night, and set an alarm for the same time each morning. This can get your body into a regular routine and help you to improve your mental health at the same time.

Appreciate Your Surroundings

Have you ever just gone outside and taken a long, deep breath of fresh air? This is something that you need to do every now and then. Feel the sun on your face. Feel the rain hitting your cheeks. Stand in a field and breathe in the flowers and the smell of the dew. Overloading your senses is the best way that you can make yourself feel wonderful, and remind yourself that you are a valid, healthy, happy human and you can do anything because you can feel everything.

You may not need a New Year celebration to kick off the whole new you, but it certainly feels like you’re closing a chapter and starting a new one when the bells toll twelve. Don’t set goals to drop a dress size and eat well unless you plan to do it while looking after your mental health at the same time. Make friends, get happy and feel fantastic about this new, comfortable you that you’ve created. What are your plans for the New Year?
